Discovering Tranquility: The Benefits of Gentle Yoga

In a world that often seems to be spinning at a relentless pace, the idea of slowing down and embracing tranquility can sound rather appealing. (Or, perhaps, appalling, too, depending on your mindset.)

Some people approach yoga they way they do other areas of life–with intensity. That approach offers its own set of benefits. For others, they may be looking for the softer benefits of a slower-paced practice. Whatever way you approach yoga, consider the benefits of a gentle yoga practice.

For me, a gentle yoga practice is an opportunity to cultivate a deep and intuitive mind-body connection. Even the way I phrased that sentence implies separateness. Rather it invites awareness and and experience of the natural wholeness that is embodied presence. This presence enhances my meditation, relationships, and work as a mental health practitioner.

I enjoy a good workout on Tonal, an intense yoga flow class, and a regular run on the treadmill. I find that gentle yoga, combined with a regular practice of Yoga Nidra, alleviate some of the more mental-related ailments of our fast-paced society–the ones that manifest as “hurry up,” “be strong,” “do more and do it better,” etc. 

Gentle yoga invites me into a more connected relationship with myself, and, thus, with others as well.
